The scale of this is basically just my DeskPi Rackmate and contents (so a Pi4, 5 and MS-01), my Unifi rack gear in the Toolless Rack, and various items around the home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have a TV up and down stairs, both have Apple TVs connected for Plex and Youtube, as well as an Apple Homepod Mini up and down stairs for music and utility. After that it’s my phone\/watch\/consoles and Unifi cameras for home security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It may look like there’s a lot to digest here, but I think this really is the bare minimum that should go into any ‘smart’ home these days. I do have a Philips Hue bridge but I dont use the lights any more, I just dont really have a need. I also do not run Home Assistant because a) I’ve never used it or learned it and b) I dont feel that I need to add it to my stack. I can do everything manually, and everything runs basically 24\/7 anyway so no need to introduce further complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I dont think I’d really do anything differently now than 5 years ago when I first started setting this gear up. My needs have been quite static, mainly:
Nextcloud to get off the Dropbox\/Google Drive software
Plex so I never have to subscribe to Netflix\/Paramount etc
Storage so I can backup whatever I am working on, and
Cameras so that I can feel secure throughout the day and night that my home is safe<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I truly hope that homes of the future have a lot of this built in. It’s hard enough to get pre-installed Cat 5\/6 cabling in the old housing that’s around where I live, nevermind cameras and smart devices by default. Maybe in a hundred year’s time!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
